First time – What is global talent?

The word – globalization or global talent – has been frequently used in everyday. As the universities have become more globalized, they started studying from this year. Also the change of the human transfer from “domestic to domestic” to “foreign to foreign” in the corporations forces us to change our organizations not only in production but also in R&D. With this change, we can say that the meaning of the required global talent is also changing.

Therefore, we will introduce the ideas from the specialists about the necessary global talent not only from the academic viewpoint but also from their experiences.

For this first time column is the entry from Mr. Fumitaka Komatsu, active human resource consultant based on his actual experiences of overseas assignment.

For this first time, I would like to think about the meaning of the word “global talent”. In general, the “global” in the English-speaking world suggests the region and the range of work. It might be only in Japan to describe the characteristics of the people like “global person”. The countries with the border like Europe and South East Asia were forced to interact with people of other countries inexorably since the border was decided by war from the past. Because people with different customs and manners interacted each other, one party could not help following the way and the idea on the other when their relationship was dominate and dominated. But intermediate ethnicity grew with time gradually. It is not right or wrong but the convenient way of thinking for both sides should survive. In other words, if the nature of the global means to create something common beyond the one area, we can say that living outside of Japan is “globalization” itself and every people living there is a “global person”. When we look at Japan, Japan is a special area that has no border, no entry or invasion from other countries. Watching the infrastructure facilities that are high-tech landscape and beautiful, it seems to have been evaluated from Europeans and Americans that Japan is a country that has been refined to all. But Japanese people have often seen monoculture and not very interesting with severe eyes. This is because we unconsciously identify the differences between Japanese and foreign, and show our “psychological defense” not to reveal our real intention to outsiders. However, as long as it is human, even though different in appearance, it should have a lot of inner feelings to empathy. It is one of the example that the commander of the U.S. Marine Corps who have come to the aid in this earthquake said “We are encouraged, and moved deeply” by the character of “ARIGATO” that extended before one’s eyes of the airplane that the victim had made from the wood debris when returning home. ◆Profile of Fumitaka Komatsu◆

After graduated from Waseda University Department of Science and Engineering, he joined Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. as a sales representative. Thereafter, he got the top sales representative position for ten years. After studying at International University of Japan on the internal studying abroad program, he was responsible as the program manager in the joint product development project with Xerox US.

He took the courses of finance and corporate strategy at UC Berkeley School and Tokyo Metropolitan University. He developed his original training program and established KFS Consulting in 2000. Using the attendants’ realistic situation for the training, he thinks his training mission is to let the attendants to develop the way to apply for their own situation based on the theoretical approach.
